The process I employ in the computer darkroom does not involve heavy plates, long exposure times, nor toxic chemicals. However, as with the early pioneers, the final image is a function of light, tone and composition.

Day Three FISA Candids Launch Area
The regatta’s format makes it appealing to rowers of all levels. Overall crew ranking is not determined on the basis of heats, repechages, semi-finals or finals. If entries exceed the number of racing lanes in any of the 100 or more events, as many races as necessary are added to the event, with a medal awarded to the winner of each race.

Competing against rowers of similar age is also an incentive to participate.

Age categories are as follows:
A - Minimum age 27 or more
B - Average age 36 or more
C - Average age 43 or more
D - Average age 50 or more
E - Average age 55 or more
F - Average age 60 or more
G - Average age 65 or more
H - Average age 70 or more

I - Average age 75 or more..

The relative obscurity of rowing has helped it develop an introspective atmosphere, where long hours, early mornings on the river, and the physical pain of the event are the price of being a part of the rowing community. The intense focus of top rowers on their sport is unusual even by the standard of similarly excellent competitors in other sports.

Day Three FISA Fours, Quads & Eights
In America, there is a sizable rowing community. Ports such as Boston, New York, and Philadelphia required the building of many small rowing boats, and competition was inevitable. The first American race took place on the Schuylkill River in 1762 between 6-oared barges. As the sport gained popularity, clubs were formed and scullers began racing for prizes. Professionals were rowing against clubs and each other before the civil war. Races were often round trips to a stake and back, so that the start and finish could be watched. The public flocked to such events, and rowing was as popular in America during the 1800s as other professional sports are today.

Lake Quinsigamond , site of the 2005 US National Masters Rowing Regatta and the ECAC (Collegiate) Rowing Championship was “the pickerel fishing place” to the native American Nipmucks. To the early Colonial settlers moving westward, it was an obstacle to the more fertile hills of what is now Worcester, Massachussetts.

Lake Quinsigamond’s gravely shores were of no use to the area’s early farmers, and so it was not until Americans were ready to cultivate the concepts of leisure and recreation that the lake drew much attention.

In the middle of the 19th century, crew racing became an important catalyst to the recreational development. The long, narrow waterway proved ideal for regattas, or boat races. Soon, several private boating clubs, canoe clubs, social clubs, parks and bathing beaches dotted the shores.

The blade is the wide part of the oar that is used to move the boat through the water. The blade is painted with a school's or club's colors and is a way to distinguish among boats at a distance.'.

The more traditional event spectators have their spots along the banks of the Charles, on docks and on the car bridges crossing from Cambridge. From almost any spot you hear the banter of the coxes, the cutting of the water by oars, or the slapping of the water when some of the boats made their way to the starting line.
