Digital Floral Woodcuts

The process I employ in the computer darkroom does not involve heavy plates, long exposure times, nor toxic chemicals. However, as with the early pioneers, the final image is a function of light, tone and composition.

Head Of The Charles 2006 Gallery
The Head of the Charles Regatta is the world's largest two-day rowing event. The first race took place October 16, 1965. In its 42-year history, the race has grown into a 62-event regatta which draws over 300,000 fans and over 8,000 athletes from 600 universities, schools and clubs. Athletes travel from 15 different countries to compete. Over 1,600 boats competed in 2006.
Cursing was penalized in the Regatta
The penalty for personally abusive language could be from 30 to 60 seconds.
Total Concentration- hold the form
  • Sculling where each rower has two oars (one in each hand). The oar in his or her right hand extends to the port side and the oar in his or her left hand extends to stabord.
  • Professional sculling was the biggest sport in Australia for most of the 60 years prior to World War I, particularly up to about 1907. Due to the need for water transport and hence professional watermen, the sport was centred in Sydney and the Northern Rivers of New South Wales. Rowing in general was also of great interest as it was reported that the Victorian Football League always made sure that football matches were not played on the same days as regattas because the regattas would always draw the crowds.
  • The Peking University Crew takes on water

. Due to visa problems the Peking University crew arrived in the country without a coxswain. Amy Sun, an MIT coxswain and regatta volunteer, was enlisted for the job. Amy, born in Taiwan, spoke Mandarin Chinese.

The crew, in the collegiate eight , was having a great race, when disaster struck. Apparently the crew bumped the Beaver Boat Club crew near the Weeks Bridge. "It was just a normal tap," Sun said after the race. "These happen all the time, and I didn't think anything of it and we kept racing. They were having a great row." (Ed Hewitt, row2k.com)

But there was a problem, and by the Eliot turn, it was a big problem. The bow section had been broken about a foot from the bowball,. There was a gaping hole in the bow, which quickly filled with water. As the crew reached Eliot Bridge, the bow submerged almost completely. Under the bridge, the boat sank, right in the middle of the primary racing arch.

    A Beacon to Oncoming Crews

Sun realized coxswains would probably not be able to see the swamped boat, and stood up in the coxswain's seat, a beacon to oncoming crews.

The coxswain (pronounced cox-n; often called the cox or Coxs'n) He/she steers and acts like a coach by communicating position and strategy to rowers. The coxswain must weigh at least 100 pounds. Coxswains are included in two events: the four with coxswain and the eight.
