| The Maori were the first to attribute the creation of the fjords to a “titanic mason”, Tute Rakiwhanoa, who hued out the steep sided valleys with keen edged adzes. No other explanation seems to fit, as it is impossible to comprehend the sheer breadth of geological events that created this seemingly perfect sculpture, as sheer cliffs rise vertically upward from the ocean. |

From then on, the sport of ‘surf bathing’ quickly grew. As the sport became more popular, the dangers of the surf became apparent. It was then that groups of experienced surfers began to establish surf life saving clubs to help protect the less proficient swimmers from the dangers of the ocean. |

The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association - MOFGA -celebrated its 30th Common Ground Country Fair on September 22, 23 & 24, in Unity, Maine. The Fair allows fairgoers to make connections with a rapidly expanding base of organic farms in the state of Maine. Despite heavy rainshowers on Saturday and Sunday, hundreds of vendors, exhibitors and demonstrators, more than 1,000 volunteers, and 46,000 fairgoers gathered in Unity to: share knowledge about sustainable living; eat delicious, organic, Maine-grown food; buy and sell beautiful Maine crafts and useful agricultural products; compete in various activities; dance; sing and have a great time.
Downeast Magazine calls Common Ground "Maine's most authentic country fair, uniting, as it does, old-time folkways with progressive ideas about living the good life on a fragile planet."
Despite the weather, fans from around the world flocked to Unity, Maine for the Mule Obstacle Course Races. Space does not allow me to fully explain the esoteric rules of the event. I can only hope that my photographs in the slide show give a hint of the drama, excitement and skill level required (by the mule and the handler) to navigate the course at breakneck speeds.
It was man and mule against the clock and the fastest and most agile teams on the planet. Click only if you dare:

| In The Arches and the Canyonlands National Parks, formation of the surface began 300 million years ago in the Pennsylvanian Period when salt water from the Cretaceous Seaway flooded the area. The water evaporated and left a deposit of salt. This process of flooding, depositing, and evaporation occurred over and over, leaving many deposits of salt thousands of feet thick. This salt was then covered with debris that fell from higher elevations due to erosion. Over time the debris was compressed into rock. The weight of this rock caused the elastic salt layer to be pushed away creating domes, cavities, faults, and anticlines. By the Late Jurassic Period, the movement of this salt layer ceased. Time passed and thousands of additional feet of rock formed on top of the salt until around 10 million years ago when the deposit of rock slowed. At this point erosion began and it has been estimated that in the last 10 million years 5,000 feet of this rock has eroded away down the Colorado. This erosion has exposed the Entrada Sandstone. Entrada Sandstone is a blend of numerous textures and densities, fused together with varying amounts of this salt cement. These variations in the rock's composition cause the different erosion features in the park and are the reason why some rock erodes faster than other rock. An arch is created from a narrow sandstone wall, or fin, that was isolated as a result of cracks in the earth and subsequent erosion. Water seeps into cracks in the fin, freezes, and expands, weakening and eventually breaking the rock, forming a hole, and eventually an arch. |

| The word "slickrock" was derived from early settlers whose metal-shod horses found the expanses of barren rock slick to cross. Mountain bikers find just the opposite is true because the naked sandstone is as "slick" as coarse sandpaper. This unique medium is a proving ground for many bike manufacturers because it allows a mountain bike to be ridden to its fullest expression. The traction between stone and tires can hold a bike at gravity defying angles, which can prove intimidating at first. But once mastered, or at least tolerated, the free-flowing nature of Slickrock might very well be the most fun you can have! Sections of the Slickrock Trail are named "Faith in Friction," "Steep Creep," and "Baby Bottom Bowl" giving colorful insight to the trail's demeanor. |

| During the last two to three million years, 20 to 30 ice sheets intermittently covered most of New England. Eventually, after the ice melted, some deepened valleys became water basins. These water-filled hollows became Eagle Lake and Echo Lake. In one instance, the glacier cut a trough that resulted from an ice-sculpting "binge," so deep that it filled with sea water. This formed a fjord now called Somes Sound. |
