Manly Beach Australia

Australia's first official surf life saving club - the first in the world - was founded at Bondi Beach, in Sydney, in 1906. There was little need for surf life saving clubs much before this time as it was illegal to swim in the surf during daylight hours before 1902. It was seen as immoral, and men and women could only 'bathe' in the early morning and late evening, and never at the same time!

The Sly brothers first used a boat for life saving, at Manly Beach, at the turn of the century. They continued making boat rescues well into the first decade, while others used the reel, line and belt for surf life saving. The Sly boat was an ordinary, double-ended lifeboat from an ocean-going ship. Although the boat was heavy and slow, it served the Sly brothers well because they could use it both for surf rescue and for fishing.

Tongariro National Park

Tongariro is a shattered remnant of an ancient volcano with red, blue and emerald crater lakes. Ngauruhoe is a symmetrical cone, which occasionally releases wisps of steam. Ruapehu is a huge multi-peaked mountain, which sometimes expels clouds of ash, and is one of the more active volcanoes in the world.

Puppets on Parade Sydney Australia

This is a picture from the items on display in the store "The Puppet Shop" at the Rocks in Sydney Australia. It's easy to miss this shop and keep walking past the sign outside. It's located down in the bowels of a historic building, There are cramped rooms full of puppets, some cheap, some worthy of a King. It's the best shop in Sydney!

The Maori belief systems are encompassed and filtered through a social structuring of Tapu. Similar to the Polynesians kapu system. Tapu, Mana, Mauri, Mauri-ora, Aroha, Utu and Makutu are all entwined into the social fabric.
