By the turn of the century prize money had become so great that some scullers made up to nearly £5,000 a year in prizes and side bets, and £2,000 for a race.
In a broad, high valley about 60 miles southeast of Mexico City is a city known by many names over the years: City of Angels, City of Tiles, Heroic City of Zaragoza. Today we know it as simply Puebla.
The process I employ in the computer darkroom does not involve heavy plates, long exposure times, nor toxic chemicals. However, as with the early pioneers, the final image is a function of light, tone and composition.
Completing a marathon is considered very difficult, but many coaches believe that it is possible for anyone who is willing to put in the time and effort.
Teotitlán's rug makers use wool which, after being shorn from the sheep, washed, carded and spun, is dyed with natural colors from animal, vegetable and mineral sources.

My brothers participated in the 27'th Annual Great Arizona Bicycle Adventure.with 200 other avid cyclists. The ride is organized by the Greater Arizona Bicycling Association (GABA). The first email update I received stated that most of the bikes were true light weight cycling machines: carbon fiber being the frame of choice. This isn't a ride for the casual commuter. The elevation rises from 500 feet at the start to 8,000 feet
One of the high points of the ride was cycling along Route 66, the National Old Trails Highway. John Steinbeck called it the Mother Road.
With the gold rush of 1849, thousands of people sought routes to California, publicizing the area in an unprecedented way. The west was being opened and from trails such as the Santa Fe Trail, Jedediah Smith’s route across the Mojave Desert to San Bernardino and Beale’s Wagon Road across New Mexico and Arizona a transportation corridor began to emerge. The railroads would follow this corridor a few years later further establishing routes west that would someday become a part of Route 66. The railroad also provided new routes for wagon travel, and wagons increasingly followed alongside the tracks.
What does a brand spanking new box of Crayola crayons bring to mind? Ever wondered how they got those labels on the crayons? We didn't have much money in my family while growing up, but I still had to have Crayolas, not any other brand. The others just didn't "color" right. One good thing about Crayolas -- they were affordable for everyone. We didn't always get indulged with the 64 box, but that's okay -- I never used all of them anyway! Crayola must have been the start of brand name recognition for me and millions of other kids across the nation.
Childhood is a distant memory, but I am still a kid in the digital darkroom. Recently I have been attempting to replicate a style similar to Batik. Batik is a wax-resist dyeing technique used on textile. Batik is found in several countries of West Africa, in Asia. However, it is in Indonesia that it is considered a national art form.
Melted wax (Javanese: malam) is applied to cloth before being dipped in dye. It is common for people to use a mixture of bees wax and paraffin wax. The bee's wax will hold to the fabric and the paraffin wax will allow cracking, which is a characteristic of batik. Wherever the wax has seeped through the fabric, the dye will not penetrate. Sometimes several colors are used, with a series of dyeing, drying and waxing steps.

Pike Place Market Jumbies (Stilt Walkers)
Between 1906 and 1907, the cost of onions increased tenfold. Outraged citizens, fed up with paying price-gouging middlemen too much for their produce, found a hero in Seattle City Councilman Thomas Revelle. Revelle proposed a public street market that would connect farmers directly with consumers. Customers would "Meet the Producer" directly, a philosophy that is still the foundation of all Pike Place Market businesses.
On August 17, 1907, Pike Place Market was born. On that first day, a total of eight farmers brought their wagons to the corner of First Avenue and Pike Streetand were quickly overwhelmed by an estimated 10,000 eager shoppers. By 11:00 am, they were sold out. Thousands of shoppers went home empty-handed, but the chaos held promise. By the end of 1907, the first Market building opened, with every space filled.
A century later, Pike Place Market is internationally recognized as America's premier farmers' market and is home to nearly 200 year-round commercial businesses.

Arches National Park preserves over 2,000 natural sandstone arches, like the world-famous Delicate Arch, as well as many other unusual rock formations. In some areas, the forces of nature have exposed millions of years of geologic history. The extraordinary features of the park create a landscape of contrasting colors, landforms and textures that is unlike any other in the world. The forces of nature have acted in concert to create the landscape of Arches, which contains the greatest density of natural arches in the world. Throughout the park, rock layers reveal millions of years of deposition, erosion and other geologic events. These layers continue to shape life in Arches today, as their erosion influences elemental features like soil chemistry and where water flows when it rains.
Arches is located in a "high desert," with elevations ranging from 4,085 to 5,653 feet above sea level. The climate is one of very hot summers, cold winters and very little rainfall. Even on a daily basis, temperatures may fluctuate as much as 50 degrees. The plants and animals in Arches have many adaptations that enable them to survive these conditions. Some species are found only in this area. The diversity of organisms reflects the variety of available habitat, which includes lush riparian areas, ephemeral pools, dry arroyos, mixed grasslands and large expanses of bare rock.
The mountain biking in the Southwest is known for its' canyons, dry riverbeds and that sticky, red rock called slickrock. Many areas have whole trails atop slickrock.

Parades are among the oldest forms of organized celebrations. They are said to date back to 3000 BC as religious observances. Romans held civil parades called triumphs to celebrate special occasions. American celebrations range from observances of important historical events, such as July 4th, to religious and ethnic holidays to secular and sports events. From community and high school homecoming parades to grand, national events, Americans love to celebrate.

Shortboarders, longboarders and bodyboarders locked horns in a series of timed heats with a set quota of waves competitors were allowed to ride. Each competitor was judged on the tricks they attempted, and points were awarded based on the degree of difficulty and variety of maneuvers.
Many found it difficult to even get up onto their boards. Organizers said, although the waves along the span known as "The Wall" at North Beach are usually around a head high, they'd been considerably smaller throughout the weekend.
This aerial ballet is the manifestation of the new water sport of Kitesurfing. Kitesurfing is the synergistic offspring of windsurfing, wake boarding and paragliding. Kitesurfers control a wing of lightweight fabric, which pulls them across the water or above it. The sport is fast becoming the center of attention on the world water sports stage as pre-conceived limitations are regularly being shattered.
Central Park Magic
It's a quintessential NYC tourist thing to do - take a hansom cab ride around Central Park. It's a tourist stereotype, but it's fun and not something you do every day, which must be why everyone does it. The cabs line up around the south end of the park, across from the famous Plaza Hotel. Find one you like and hop in. Rides tend to run around $25 and loop up to the halfway point of the park and around - maybe about 20 minutes. If you get a good cabbie, he'll give you a history of Park sites and others within eyeshot. Make sure you get the cute photo of yourself in the cab.
