About myself: Jack Egan

A long running TV show, "about nothing" once had a little skit about the significance of the names parents choose for their children. I think one joke went: "With a name like Jeeves, he isn't going to grow up to be a hit man." Well I was lucky, I only had to cope with Jack, John, John Francis or assorted nicknames. I've never been what you would call svelte, so I remember the occasional pain and humiliation of the term husky. There were lots of Jacks and Johns as I grew up. The shout of "Jack" could originate from the class bully or the prettiest girl in the class. Not knowing which Jack was the subject of the invitation, I experienced a few moments of panic, mumbling the silent prayer: "Please not me...please let it be me...please not me!" We're born confused, and we rarely recover

I majored in Literature in college. My earliest career tracks were the construction industry (working in a factory which made roofing shingles) and as a substitute teacher in middle school. I was a mathematics teacher, naturally, as my degree was in Literature. The students, aged thirteen, knew as much if not more about Life and definitely more about mathematics. The principal explained that my primary responsibility was to protect the equipment.

I joined the Peace Corps and spent three years as a teacher in Africa. An early indication of my future destiny as a photographer was that I didn't bring a camera, and never took a picture while in Africa. Before leaving for Africa, I had read an article which mentioned that many people in the country believed that a camera would steal their soul. I made some friends during my stay, and came to realize that the article was not far from the truth.

I actually studied photography and darkroom techniques when I first returned from Peace Corps. However various circumstances took me through numerous careers and courses of study: payroll clerk for 2,000 nurses, public accounting, health care consulting and Controller for a start-up company working in a 200 year old barn with poor electricity and extremely large flies in the spring. I studied accounting and finance when I realized I did not want to be a starving photographer! I eventually received an MBA, and pursued advanced studies in Plant Science (I was going to discover a new strain of corn and feed the world) and data management (I came to the realization that most computer programmers had large derrieres and were addicted to computer games).

Fortune has allowed me to come full circle and return to my earlier interest in photography. I am at that age were some weight loss would be beneficial. I certainly don't believe all photographers need to starve, but my initial goals are realistic if not humble. The industry has changed tremendously, but the possibilities are unlimited. I am grateful that my parents' gave me a generic name. It's allowed me to explore numerous paths unhindered.

The Maori were the first to attribute the creation of the fjords to a “titanic mason”, Tute Rakiwhanoa, who hued out the steep sided valleys with keen edged adzes. No other explanation seems to fit when speaking about Milford Sound in New Zealand, as it is impossible to comprehend the sheer breadth of geological events that created this seemingly perfect sculpture, as sheer cliffs rise vertically upward from the ocean.
