Digital Floral Woodcuts

The process I employ in the computer darkroom does not involve heavy plates, long exposure times, nor toxic chemicals. However, as with the early pioneers, the final image is a function of light, tone and composition.

Acadia National Park Maine

Lakes, such as Jordan Pond, formed in valleys dammed by ridges of glacial debris. Plants and animals colonized the uncovered land. Rivers and streams carved new drainage paths, and by 9,000 years ago, the region became home to people.
Acadia’s landscape is the product of great expanses of time. Massive geologic forces—mountain building, molten magmas, and huge ice sheets—formed the landscape, while the persistent forces of erosion—water, wind, and waves—ever so slowly continue to shape what we see today, leaving a record of Acadia’s geologic past written in the rocks.
Ponds are often full of plant and animal life, especially if their waters contain nitrogen (needed for plant growth) and phosphorus (needed for plant reproduction). Aquatic plants grow at various depths, some preferring the shallows near the edge of a pond, some thriving in moderate depths. Many freefloating plants and algae benefit from the bright sunlight at the surface and the waterborne nutrients in the pond itself.

Parade for a Sports Club Oaxaca Mexico

The origin of Mocko Jumbies (Stilt Walkers) has been traced to the 13th and 14th centuries, although it could date back even further. From their towering heights, they could see evil spirits approaching the village in time to warn the villagers. The villagers, particularly the children, would be frightened by their tremendous height and dominating presence. Often they would be someone who lived among the villagers, but they always remained anonymous by wearing a mask and covering their body in traditional clothing..

Black and White:

An advantage of digital photography is the ability to easily work in a "color" mode or a "black and white" mode. For example, I may have taken an image with color film, and later scanned the negative or slide into PhotoShop. I can work with the image in its natural color state, but I can also reduce or eliminate the "color " and work only with the various shades of gray information. Each image can thus result at least two different prints. Images from my digital camera are shot in Raw format. The information is bits and bytes. I later determine if the print will be color or black and white. When you consider the additional possibilities of Duotone or Quadtone processing (without the hassles of toxic chemicals) the advantages of a digital darkroom become more apparent.

A constant challenge is to develop work flows and methodologies that result in prints produced from ink jet printers that are similar to, mirror or exceed the quality of prints produced in conventional darkrooms. I am constantly experimenting with the Quad tone RIP with the Epson 2200 printer. I am very happy with the look of Crane Silver Rag paper with the new Epson 2400. The prints "sing" in both black and white and color!
