FISA World Sprints

FISA, “Fédération Internationale des Sociétés d’Aviron” in French, or the English equivalent International Federation of Rowing Associations is the governing body of the sport of rowing. It is empowered by its 120 member National Rowing Federations, the National Olympic Committees and the International Olympic Committee to govern the sport of rowing. FISA sets the rules and regulations for the practice of the sport, in all its forms (elite, adaptive, and soon coastal and indoor), and organizes sanctioned World Rowing events. It also provides advice and expertise for the organization of rowing regattas, on coaching education and other matters relating to the sport and its development.

FISA was founded by representatives from France, Switzerland, Belgium, Adriatica (now a part of Italy) and Italy in Turin on June 25, 1892. It is the oldest international sports federation in the Olympic movement. Its first headquarters office was established in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1922 and, after moving away, returned to its roots in February 1996. .

Pike Place Market

Between 1906 and 1907, the cost of onions increased tenfold. Outraged citizens, fed up with paying price-gouging middlemen too much for their produce, found a hero in Seattle City Councilman Thomas Revelle. Revelle proposed a public street market that would connect farmers directly with consumers. Customers would "Meet the Producer" directly, a philosophy that is still the foundation of all Pike Place Market businesses.

On August 17, 1907, Pike Place Market was born. On that first day, a total of eight farmers brought their wagons to the corner of First Avenue and Pike Street—and were quickly overwhelmed by an estimated 10,000 eager shoppers. By 11:00 am, they were sold out. Thousands of shoppers went home empty-handed, but the chaos held promise. By the end of 1907, the first Market building opened, with every space filled.

A century later, Pike Place Market is internationally recognized as America's premier farmers' market and is home to nearly 200 year-round commercial businesses.

Northeast Surfing Championship

Hampton Beach New Hampshire hosted the Eastern Surfing Association's Northeast Surfing Championship over the May 12'th weekend. It was the first time in 10 years the town has been chosen as the site of the three-day competition.An estimated 350 surfers from around New England qualified to compete in this year's event, with 30 surfers from the Seacoast invited to attend. The location of the competition is rotated among several cities in the Northeast.

Shortboarders, longboarders and bodyboarders locked horns in a series of timed heats with a set quota of waves competitors were allowed to ride. Each competitor was judged on the tricks they attempted, and points were awarded based on the degree of difficulty and variety of maneuvers.

Many found it difficult to even get up onto their boards. Organizers said, although the waves along the span known as "The Wall" at North Beach are usually around a head high, they'd been considerably smaller throughout the weekend.

When a wave reaches the shallow shoreline of an ocean or other large body of water, the upper portion of the wave pitches forward and the wave begins to break—a motion often indicated by crests of foam called whitecaps. The size and forward motion of the wave subsequently diminish. The basic idea behind surfing is to ride the unbroken portion of a wave for as great a distance as possible, using a variety of maneuvers to speed up, slow down, and maneuver around the breaking portion of the wave.

The Head of the Charles Regatta is the world's largest two-day rowing event. The first race took place October 16, 1965. In its 42-year history, the race has grown into a 62-event regatta which draws over 300,000 fans and over 8,000 athletes from 600 universities, schools and clubs. Athletes travel from 15 different countries to compete.
